February 14, 2024 – Update 1

Adam said David was a little fussy overnight, but slept well in his swing. They were cuddling when I arrived this morning, and David had just had a bath. They connected his IV and then I got my snuggles in. We got a few extra minutes of cuddle time in as they tracked down a transport monitor. Eventually, we made our way to pre-op and around 7:30 this morning, they took him back to the operating room. Our feelings are bittersweet. If all goes well, this will help him immensely. Yet, you can’t ever shake the feeling of what if it doesn’t.

Around lunch, there were a few Viking players here, with donuts and cocoa. There were also various Valentine’s Day activities and handouts, along with some Build- a-Bears. We grabbed a bear with a heart shirt for David. Then we took the bear’s photo with the various Vikings players and had them sign the bear’s shirt. Hopefully this bear is something that David will cherish one day as he learns about its adventures while he was in his first major heart surgery.

Otherwise, they started the surgery slightly before 10. That was our first update. “They started 3 minutes ago – prep took a little longer than we anticipated.” Our next update was around noon, we learned that David was stable, that they are working on the repairs, and that it would be quite a while before they were finished.

We’ve spent most of the day in his new CVICU room otherwise. Nurses have been by to prep the room as much as they can for when he does return. The nurse (Kyle) who gave us a tour of the unit before he was born and was David’s nurse for a couple days in his first 2 weeks stopped by as well. He expressed how amazed he was to see how well David has done so far and couldn’t believe he was already 3 months old. We’re hopeful for more encouraging updates throughout the rest of the day and evening.
