Slow and steady progress was the name of the game today. David had his eyes open a lot more than he has since the surgery. Not only were they open, but he was tolerating being awake. He seemed to be taking in his surroundings and putting faces to voices. His periods of being upset were not quite as drastic as they have been, and he overcame them quicker as well. I think he’s starting to like his nurse now that he sees she does more than just suction him out. Suctioning is his least favorite thing and always causes a period of being upset.

Today, they did remove one of his lines. This will allow him to have less fluid pumped into him daily. To do this though, since he had 3 lines in close proximity, they had to remove all those dressings and then redo the dressings after removing the one line. He handled the whole procedure very well.

He also passed all 3 of his pressure support trials. Well, the first one was cut a few minutes short, but that was merely because they were going to remove his IV line and figured he’d be upset. During the second one, he became upset at being repositioned, but quickly recovered. As far as I know, he had no issues with his third one. This is a step in the right direction to getting that breathing tube removed. David’s foley was also removed today, so now he can fill his diapers – and he does love to fill them – especially right after getting a clean one.

As for the other kids, they spent the morning at the hospital – playing in the Endzone. Then Adam took them home where they went to a game store to meet Pikachu before playing at a park and then ultimately coming home to play outside. The dogs liked having everyone home for more than just evening because they got an opportunity to be outside too. They have been left at home for quite a bit since David’s been hospitalized, so it was nice for them to get some outside playtime as well.

Tomorrow, hopefully David will get the rest of his chest closed up. There’s only a couple centimeters left in the muscle and tissue layers that it will hopefully close easily. Perhaps they will also remove his chest drainage bulbs since they are hardly removing anything.
