November 1, 2023

David has been transferred to his room in the CVICU. He did a lot better today than anyone had anticipated, and we are so thankful for everyone’s prayers. Adam and I were able to see him a short while ago, and are so impressed with his progress so far. He still has a long road ahead of him, but he’s in really good hands.

This morning, they were able to open up his septum to allow the blood to flow into his right chamber. After he stabilized on that and had good oxygen stats, they decided to go ahead with part two, which placed some flow restrictors, to try to balance the blood flow that goes to his lungs. That went well, so they went ahead and placed another stent to hold open his ductus, which allows blood to flow to the lower region of the body (as opposed to just the lungs) After that stent was placed though, David’s oxygen stats started to plummet, so they ultimately needed to go back in and remove those flow restrictor plugs. This was the only setback so far today, and we are so pleased with what David has tolerated so far. He’s definitely a fighter.

At some point in the future (whether that is tonight, tomorrow, or a few days from now), he will eventually need those flow restrictors placed again. David’s body was telling them that today was not the day. He will tell us when he’s ready for those restrictors based on his oxygen and blood pressure. Since he has two stents already placed, the chances of the flow restrictor plugs being placed via a catheterization procedure becomes that much harder. Instead, it seems likely, that it will be a surgical procedure where a small incision will be made in his chest and bands will be placed around those pulmonary arteries instead of a plug inside of them. I’m not sure how the nutmeg lung factors into this though.

Tonight, we’re thanking God that David is stable and doing as well as he is. We were overcome with joy when he came out crying and taking breaths all on his own. All of the doctors and nurses we spoke to are also equally amazed and happy with his progress so far. We’re hoping for an uneventful night tonight and for many more positive days ahead. We do know this is a marathon, and not a sprint. There will be setbacks along the way, and we are here to support David on each step of the journey.
